Unemployment

Unemployment

An involuntary reduction in work always constitutes a serious issue. If the decrease in workload arises from a disability, you may want to read the Temporary or Permanent Disability Life Events pages on this website. If, on the other hand, unemployment is due to other factors, such as being laid off, you will need to plan accordingly.

Plan Checklist

  • If your reduction in work results in insufficient hours to maintain continuing health plan coverage, you may, under most circumstances, elect to self-pay for your coverage by remitting an amount equal to the difference between the number of hours required for your coverage (700 for Plan A, 800 for Plan B) and your actual number of hours of work, multiplied by 50% of the average Journeyman’s Fund contribution rate stated in the Inside Construction Agreement.  You will receive an invoice from the Fund office for your self-pay coverage.
  • If you qualify for New York State Unemployment Benefits, your self-pay amount is determined by multiplying the number of hours needed to meet the hours requirement for your coverage by 25% of the average Journeyman’s Fund contribution rate stated in the Inside Construction Agreement.
  • If your reduction in work was due to a disability, please review the Life Events sections on Permanent and Temporary Disability.
  • You should understand and apply for any available benefit under the Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (Plan A).
  • If you think that your reduction in work may cause you to leave the industry entirely, you may want to look at the Life Event page covering that topic for additional considerations.
